Better still, those those eating in or around your hotel's restaurant or cafe, the provision of a prominent recycling bin will attract regular well-meaning contributions and your recyclable packging materials end up going where they were designed to go! Compostable Food Packaging, Utensils & Drinkware for Hotel Restaurants: A Closer LookWhen it comes to the packaging of food and drink, there is definitely something in the air. Little by little, restaurants and catering departments of all sizes are making the switch from plastic to environmentally-friendly alternatives. As the nation (and increasingly the wider word) begins to wake up to the harm that discarded plastic does to wildlife and natural habitats, so the exodus of usage of plastic continues to gain momentum. Around 800,000 tonnes of food pacgaing and drink-related waste is dumped every year in the UK alone, and hotels, restaurants and cafes are keen to distance themselves forever from this state of affairs. The backlash against the use of plastic products in everyday consumer behaviour has affected us all, most prominently with the introduction of carrier bag charges, and the keen promotion of the re-use of a sturdy ‘Bag for Life’. Indeed, a major newspaper recently organised a two-day voluntary litter pick to tackle existing non-biodegradable plastic pollution, in tune with the mood of the times. To this end, who hasn’t seen the heartbreaking evidence on social media, along with accompanying petitions, that small plastic ‘microbeads’, used as an abrasive in shower products, was causing direct arm to marine ecosystems? It is in this climate that businesses are clamouring to align themselves with biodegradable packaging alternatives. After all, if somebody does drop litter, despite one’s moral obligation to dispose of waste responsibly, the physical disappearance of said litter is the environment’s last available line of defence! You can easily make your own contribution to the eco-friendly movement and abandon plastic in favour of compostable alternatives – and you can even repeat the trick with your cared packaging too! The secret to compostable plastic food packaging is PLA. What is this, and how does it work? PLA stands for Polylactic Acid, and is sourced from sugarcane in the United Kingdom and Europa, but can also be made from corn starch, cassava roots or even wood chips and regular starch. The common thread is that renewable means of production are utilised for their production, completely bypassing the usual petrochemicals route. PLA products look and feel much like ordinary plastic, and function just as well at containing liquids; it is likely that most people given a PLA pint cup at an outdoor event, for example, wouldn’t even notice that it wasn’t a regular plastic one. The key difference is that it will one day cease to exist, whether carelessly dropped as litter, or more likely, when sent to a landfill. Consider also the replacement other materials with compostable alternatives. FMP (Fibre Moulded Product) plates will break down naturally when exposed to the elements, in a way that would take lot longer for regular paper plates. And once you have replaced replacing polystyrene burger boxes with FMP alternatives, which essentially look and feel like cardboard, it is hard to see why one would ever want to revert to polystyrene ever again. Along with plastic cups, lids, food boxes and other packaging, don’t forget that plastic cutlery is also ripe for eco-friendly substitution. As before, of course, these are indistinguishable from regular plastic cutlery, with the exact same biodegradable benefits. Paper straws are really beginning to make their way in the world, with several major pub and restaurant chains adopting them as standard. Considering straws are single-use items, only ever seeing fleeting service during their working life, and demand for drinks sometimes outstripping those of every restaurant knows what a high turnover these products. There is no reason why your own establishment shouldn’t the new wave, adopting paper straws as your only straws. It is very likely, after all, that one day all drinking straws will be eco-friendly, biodegradable paper alternatives, so why not become an early-adopter. Starting with straws, but moving onto PLA ‘plastic’ drinkware and compostable FMP food packaging, lead the way forward as the Green wave breaks across hotel and restaurants everywhere! |
